Students excel in distance learning during Covid-19 lockdown conditions, gaining a bumper crop of results.

Central Birmingham based education provider GB Training has been busy innovating to adapt to working with a range of learners and businesses, providing training and qualifications via remote ways of learning. The learners were able to continue to upskill in areas essential to the workplace, working towards boosting the West Midlands economy in this critical time.

41 learners, who’s jobs range from Manager to Team Leaders from a range of business sectors have taken Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor and Level 5 Operational and Department Manager apprenticeships and are from a range of local companies, including Briggs Equipment, Sharps Bedrooms  and AM2PM.

GB Training worked closely with awarding body Skillsfirst to increasing flexibility around when learners could commence their course and timings of tests and assessments, enabling learners to continue with non-invigilated aspects of the courses via video link.  GB Training provided remote one to one teacher sessions and all course information was accessible remotely.

For those whose workplaces are not yet open, GB Training was able to provide socially distanced and sanitised exam conditions so the learners could safely complete their courses.

Excellent results were achieved – with 88% gaining distinctions and 12% gaining merits on the Team Leader/Supervisor course and 73% gaining distinctions and 26% gaining merits on the Operational and Department Manager course, reflecting the hard work of all involved and also demonstrating the new ways of learning had been a success.

As a result of successfully completing their courses, some of the learners have now been offered new roles and responsibilities in the workplace.

Victoria Harte, Director of Quality Improvement said “I’m delighted with the results our learners have achieved. It is testament to the hard work of both them and their tutors, they’ve achieved amazing things in such adverse conditions. I am also proud of GB Training’s approach, as a provider we have harnessed the silver lining from the Covid-19 situation, as we’ve found new and innovative ways to keep learning happening. At the same time we are contributing to upskilling the West Midlands workforce and building confidence in individuals with our soft skills training, which in some cases may have been eroded by the personal situations we find ourselves in, caused by the impacts of the pandemic”.
